A gold breakout bot. It waits for price to break out of a key range, then lets winning trades ride the trend as far as it goes
Introduction

Strategies Info
CLOUDPips Kumo is a breakout trading robot for gold (XAUUSD) on standard and cent accounts. It waits for price to break out of its recent range and then follows the move. There is no fixed take profit: a trailing stop lets the winners run, and a few big trends make most of the profit.

What's New — Version 1.2
- Withdrawal Simulator: new "Withdrawal rule" setting. Choose how the simulated withdrawals are counted.
- Each profitable day (default): works exactly as before.
- Only when the balance makes a new high: a share of profit is counted only when your balance reaches a new high. Losses are earned back first, so the simulated withdrawals never eat into your capital.
- The withdrawal percentage (50% by default) works with both rules.
- Trading logic and presets are unchanged. Backtest results are the same as version 1.1.
How it works
- Breakout levels: Kumo tracks the market's recent swing highs and lows.
- Entry: when price closes beyond one of these levels, Kumo trades in the direction of the break, in line with the larger market structure.
- Kaze (wind) filter, new in 1.1, on by default: the market must be at least as active as normal for that time of day, and the activity must be rising. Breakouts in a quiet market are often false. Our research found the breakouts Kaze skips are losing trades as a group.
- Stop loss: volatility-based, on every trade.
- Exit: no fixed take profit. A trailing stop follows the trend and closes the trade when the move turns.
- Lot size: calculated from a % of your balance for every trade.
Expect a win rate of around 38%, but the winners are on average about 2.3 times the size of the losers (+1.91% vs −0.82% of the balance in the 2003–2026 Default.set backtest). At that ratio, winning about 30% of trades breaks even, so the bot survives losing more often than it wins. Most trades are small wins or small losses.

Recommended settings
- Symbol: XAUUSD (tested on gold only).
- Chart timeframe: any. We recommend D1: the chart loads fastest and uses the least memory. The bot reads the timeframes it needs internally, so the chart timeframe does not change its trades.
- Minimum balance: 1,000 USD on a standard account, or 10,000 USC on a cent account.
- Presets:
- Default: RiskPercent = 1.0.
- Aggressive: RiskPercent = 2.0.
- Load either one as a .set file, and leave all other inputs at their defaults.
- Aggressive risk: the equity drawdown reached about 50% over 23 years. Use it only with money you can afford to lose.
- Do not run Kumo with CLOUDPips Hoshi on the same account: Hoshi already contains Kumo's main breakout entry.
- Running several CLOUDPips bots or symbols on one account? Lower RiskPercent to 0.5 on each.
- Small balances: the broker's minimum lot can mean more risk than the % you set.
- VPS: recommended, so the trailing stop keeps updating.
Who it is for
- Breakout traders who want a proven gold system they can also fine-tune
- Traders who are fine with about one trade a week and a low win rate with large winners
- Not for anyone expecting guaranteed returns or trading money they cannot afford to lose

- Realistic spread: every trade is costed with a realistic 24-pip (0.24 USD) spread, the typical spread of a standard account. Many backtests use a much lower spread; ours does not.
- Frequency: about 1.1 trades per week on average.
- The 23-year figures: they compound for 23 years, so they are not a realistic expectation. Look at the profit factor, the drawdown and the 2024–2026 test instead.
- Losing years: Kumo has them too. On the Default preset: 2003 (−6.2%), 2004 (−7.4%), 2005 (−7.7%), 2007 (−8.3%), 2012 (−2.0%), 2014 (−3.8%), 2018 (−5.3%), 2021 (−10.5%), 2022 (−10.7%).
- Best years: 2016 (+73.6%), 2026 to date (+65.5%) and 2013 (+52.1%).
- 2024–2026: the strongest stretch in the 23 years (a strong gold trend). Do not expect every period to look like it.
- Your results will differ: they depend on your broker's spread, swap, execution and the tick data your tester uses.
Past performance does not guarantee future results. Results depend on your broker's spread, swap and execution.

|---|---|---|
| What you pay | Per 3, 6 or 12 months, in Thai baht | One payment, in USD |

Does Kumo make money every month?
No. Kumo is a breakout strategy: most trades end as small losses or small wins, and the profit comes from a few large trends. When gold moves inside a range and keeps breaking out falsely, the bot can hit several stop losses in a row, and a losing stretch can last weeks or months.
From the 2003–2026 backtest of Default.set (1% risk per trade):
- Equity fell by up to 26.92% at its worst
- About 38% of trades were winners: an average win was +1.91% of the balance and an average loss −0.82% (about 2.3×) — the profit comes from winners being much bigger than losers, not from winning often
No trading system can guarantee profit, and past results are not a forecast. Only trade with money you can afford to lose. See the Risk Warning.
How far can I trust the backtests?
- Default.set and Aggressive.set were tested in the MT5 Strategy Tester on real tick data over 2003–2026 (about 23 years), through rising, falling and sideways markets.
Limits to keep in mind: a backtest can't fully reproduce live conditions such as spreads widening around news, slippage or lost connections, so live results vary by broker and spread.
To check for yourself, backtest it on your own computer with the full file, free (see Can I try it before I pay?).
All backtests with charts are in the Backtest section of the Kumo page, and how to read the numbers is in Reading Backtest Numbers.
Can I run Kumo with another CLOUDPips bot on the same account?
Yes, on a Hedging account. Each bot uses its own magic number and license key and only manages its own trades (on a Netting account MT5 merges both bots' gold trades into one position). The risk adds up: two bots at 1% each can have 2% of your balance at risk at the same time, so we suggest a risk per trade of 0.5% on each — the 1% default is designed for one bot per account.
Already running CLOUDPips Hoshi? Then you don't need Kumo too: Kumo's H4 breakout is one of Hoshi's 5 entries, so running both would open the same trades twice. Details: Can I run two CLOUDPips bots on the same account?
How many accounts can one license run? Can I move it?
One license runs one MT5 account at a time. To run two accounts at once you need two licenses. If you start the EA on a second account while the first is still running, the second shows IN USE.
You can move it as often as you like — another account, broker or VPS:
- Usually: remove the EA from the old account's chart; the key frees up at once. Then attach the EA on the new account.
- Can't reach the old computer: press Deactivate on that license in My licenses, then press CHECK LICENSE on the EA's panel on the new account.
- VPS down or offline: after 30 minutes the key is released automatically.
Close trades on the old account before moving — trades left open there won't be managed. Details: Move to another account or VPS.
What happens when my license ends?
- The EA's panel shows
EXPIRED - Open trades stay open with their stop loss at the broker; the bot just stops opening new trades, and CLOSE ALL on the panel always works
- Renew in My licenses → Renew with the same key — nothing to change in MT5. The EA starts trading again within 10 minutes (or press CHECK LICENSE to check right away)
- The new time is added after the old end date, or counts from the day you pay if the license had already ended
See Renew and License Status on the Panel.
Can I get a refund?
Payments are final, because the license works the moment you pay. That's why you can backtest the full bot for free first (see Can I try it before I pay?).
The exception: if you were charged twice for one order, email support@cloudpips.io with your 12-digit order number and proof of payment, and we return the duplicate charge. See the refund policy.
